Cat litter can become moldy—especially starch and grain based sands (corn, wheat, tofu) when it gets moisture. Mold often begins in packaging or improper storage; In the container, it is seen in a layer that remains constantly wet. Dry, cool, closed storage almost completely prevents mold growth. Cat litter from olive pits and woody, non-starchy litters such as pine pellets are more resistant to mold. Do not use sand where you notice a musty odor, discoloration or staining.
Cat litter is thought to be "perishable". When stored correctly, it largely is; But when moisture enters the equation, the picture changes. This article explains how and why mold occurs and how to prevent it.
Why does cat litter become moldy?
Mold fungi require three things: moisture, nutrients and appropriate temperature. The meeting of these three in cat litter depends on the type of litter and storage conditions.
Mineral sands (bentonite, silica) do not provide nutrients for mold; Even if they get moisture, they do not become moldy, they just lose their performance. Vegetative sands, on the other hand, have an organic structure — nutrients are already present here, the only thing missing is moisture.
Which sands are riskier?
| Litter type | Mold risk | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Corn | High | Starch based, moisture absorbing |
| Wheat | High | Grain structure is suitable for mold |
| Tofu (soy) | High | Contains protein and starch |
| Paper | Middle | Cellulose retains moisture |
| Pine pellets | Low | Contains woody, natural resin |
| Olive pit | Low | Hard, woody, non-starchy |
| Bentonite | None | No minerals, organic nutrients |
| Crystal (silica) | None | Mineral |
This doesn't mean that vegetable sand is bad — if stored correctly, there will be no problems. However, if you live in a humid climate and are buying in bulk, you should take this difference into account when choosing sand type. See plant based cat litter.
For those who want to use vegetal sand in a humid climate, two woody options stand out: olive pit cat litter And pine pellets. Since neither of them contain starch, they do not provide nutrients to mold fungi.
Where does mold growth start?
- In opened package. The most common scenario. An unsealed package absorbs moisture from the air.
- In the wrong storage place. Bathrooms, closed balconies, basements and garages are the riskiest spots.
- In the package placed directly on the floor. The concrete floor gives off moisture from below.
- At the bottom of the container. The wet layer that cannot be reached with a scoop may become moldy if not replaced for a long time.
- In a container that has not been washed and dried well. Pouring sand while the container is damp will wet the ground.
- In the sand kept outside. Humidity and temperature fluctuation accelerate deterioration.
The most frequently overlooked detail: After washing the container, wait for it to dry completely. Sand spilled on the wet container creates a moist layer on the bottom layer, which becomes a source of both odor and mold.
Signs of deterioration
Do not use sand if you have these symptoms:
• Mold or damp smell
• Greenish, grayish or white spotting
• Color darkening
• Hardened, stuck together clusters in the package
• Sour, unusual odor
• Presence of insects or larvae
In moistened grain and starch based products mycotoxin may occur. EFSA It deals with mycotoxins within the scope of food and feed safety. Cat litter is not bait, but the cat comes into contact with the litter and licks its paw — it is best not to use the questionable product.
Prevention
- Store dry and coolA pantry, hallway cabinet or bedroom cabinet is ideal. Not a bathroom or balcony. Detail: how to store.
- Close the package tightlyClip or thick tape; It is not enough to fold it and leave it alone.
- Transfer to a lidded containerThis is the safest method.
- Raise above groundPlace on shelf, pallet or board; Avoid direct contact with the concrete floor.
- First in, first outIf there is more than one package, finish the old one first.
- Dry the container thoroughlyAfter washing, do not pour sand until it is completely dry.
- Do not neglect the bottom layerMake the full replacement in a timely manner. See How often is it changed?.
- Take small pack in humid climateBulk buying only makes sense if there is proper storage. See bulk purchase.
Health dimension
A moldy environment is not suitable for breathing for both cats and humans. Cats dig by putting their nose close to the litter box; They are directly exposed to mold spores. In cats with respiratory problems, this may aggravate the existing situation. For dust and respiratory contact cat litter dust See our article.
Moldy sand should be thrown away and the container should be washed with hot water and soap. must be completely dried, then new sand should be added. Do not flush moldy sand down the toilet; see How to dispose of cat litter.
Moisture resistant woody structure

Frequently asked questions
Does cat litter get moldy?
Yes, especially starch and grain-based vegetable sands can become moldy when they get moisture. Mineral sands (bentonite, silica) do not mold, but lose performance in humidity.
What should be done with moldy cat litter?
It should not be used and should be thrown away in a sealed bag. The container should be washed with hot water and soap, dried completely, and then new sand should be added.
Can cat litter be stored on the balcony?
Not recommended. Humidity and temperature fluctuation are high on the balcony; Both absorbency decreases and there is a risk of mold in vegetable sands.
Which cat litter does not mold?
Mineral sands such as bentonite and crystal silica do not mold because they do not contain organic nutrients. Among the vegetal sands, those with a woody and starch structure (olive stone, pine pellet) are the most durable.
I can't tell whether it's a musty smell or an ammonia smell?
Ammonia is pungent and stinging and comes from used sand. The smell of mold is damp, sour and earthy; It is usually noticed in sand that has not yet been used.
